Sanitary Sewer Smoke Test to take Place May 26-29, 2026.
NOTICE OF SANITARY SEWER SMOKE TESTING
The City of Elroy will be undertaking a program to investigate sources of storm water entering the sanitary sewer system. A smoke testing survey will be conducted in the City between Tuesday, May 26, 2026 and Friday, May 29, 2026 by MSA Professional Services, Inc. Smoke will be introduced into the sanitary sewer system to locate clear water inflow and infiltration (I&I) sources such as illegal or inadvertent connections with storm drains, down spouts, and broken sanitary sewer pipes. The smoke is intended to fill the sanitary sewer system and will release from such cross connections and illegal/inadvertent connections. As a result, smoke can potentially enter homes and buildings through infrequently used plumbing connections. The smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, and not a product of combustion. The smoke can be an irritant if it is inhaled.
TO PREVENT THE RELEASE OF SMOKE INTO YOUR HOME, OFFICE, OR BUILDING, THE CITY REQUESTS THAT RESIDENTS POUR WATER DOWN ANY INFREQUENTLY USED FLOOR DRAINS, SINK DRAINS OR TOILETS TO FILL THE PLUMBING TRAPS WITH WATER BEFORE THE SMOKE TESTING PERIOD.
In the event that smoke enters your home, office or building during the testing period, immediately ventilate the building to disperse the smoke. If you cannot locate the source of the smoke, please notify the fire department and City Hall.
Your cooperation will help the City of Elroy identify and remedy problems with our sanitary sewer system. Residents with questions should contact the Water and Wastewater Department at (608) 462-2400 or Andy Zimmer (MSA Professional Services) at 608-355-8969.
